I look at the harvest moon hanging in the sky like a heavy pendant and say wistfully to my girls, "Would you look at the moon?"

They are busy doing homework at the kitchen table and ignore me. Moon shmoon.

"It means fall is here," I say with enthusiasm.

Backs shift my direction. Apparently, I'm being a distraction, again, and sentimental to boot. This does not stop me.

"Know what's special about this year's full moon?" Through the backs of their heads, I see their eyes roll. "Well, it landed on the exact day that summer handed the reins over to fall. That won't happen again until 2029."

"Mom, I'm trying to do algebra here," one daughter says.

"You need to pay attention to the harvest moon, because it tells us it's time for a change."

"You're turning into a werewolf?" the other daughter says.

"Right!" (Finally, I've got their attention!) "I'm like a character out of Twilight, minus the sex appeal, changing with the moon, or in this case with the season."

Heads wag with hopelessness. One says, "Mom, the Twilight characters don't change with the moon."

"Oh. Well, my point is ..."

Their hands go up to their foreheads like visors.

"....you need to notice what's happening in nature," I say, and head to the basement to rummage for the autumn box.

Already I've noticed my sleeves have dropped below my elbows. I'm reaching for a sweater more often, turning lights on earlier, and falling into the rhythm of school days. And now the harvest moon howls: Time to tuck away summer and embrace fall. It's bittersweet, like a retirement party.

I haul the box upstairs, open it and pull out corduroy pillows, which I line up on the bench in the mudroom; a Pendleton wool throw, which I toss over the sofa; and my collection of ceramic glazed pumpkins.

"Excuse me," I say, as I place the ceramic pumpkins on the kitchen table, study central.

One sister groans.

"Just humor her," says the other, sliding her books over to make room for the fall decor, "or she'll start talking about the moon again."

A Season To Nest

People who don't change up their décor with the seasons miss out, says Los Angeles interior designer Christopher Grubb. "In places where the climate doesn't change with the season it's important to add seasonal décor as a psychological reminder, otherwise you don't know if it's November or February. In places where the weather does cooperate, seasonal décor reminds families that it's the time of year to turn back into the home and nest."
