DARTMOUTH — If you have ever had the chance to drive around the gated community of Round Hill, the experience was no doubt breathtaking. A mixture of summer and year-round homes are just a stone's throw from Buzzards Bay and Padanaram Harbor. There are stunning views of the Elizabethan Islands and access to private and public beaches. But perhaps most striking is the mansion, an enormous granite structure with a slate roof and imposing columns set on a sprawling green lawn. Inside this magnificent building is the Home of the Week.

The Mansion at Round Hill was built in 1921 by Colonel Edward Green, son of Hetty Green, better known as "The Witch of Wall Street." In 1987, the mansion was converted into 16 condo units, and the Home of the Week is the gem. Located on the top floor, it is one of three units that have access to a roof deck with amazing views and space to socialize or grill. Situated in the middle of the mansion's top floor, it has no counterparts, but is one-of-a-kind. The master bedroom, with its porthole window, is directly above the mansion's front door.

If location wasn't enough, living at Round Hill comes with additional perks. Amenities include beach access, an in-ground pool, tennis courts, a playground, a clubhouse and a Robert Trent Jones nine-hole waterfront golf course.

"You're not buying a condo; you're buying a lifestyle," said Linda Hopps of Coldwell Banker Hopps Realty Group.

Walk in the front door of the mansion, and you step back in time as you are greeted by archways, columns and chandeliers. The décor is ornate and antique. Even the elevator is charming and historic; a gate must be pulled across the opening of the elevator before it will move up or down.

Once on the proper floor, the small hallway, granting access to two of the condos, is the last glimpse at the old-fashioned aspects of the home before one is thrust into modernity inside the front door. The walls are painted a crisp white, skylights abound and there is an open floor plan. The current homeowner's quirky, bold decorations and furnishings add to the modern feel of the place. Large prints of comic-book illustrations blanket the walls, while geometric chairs in bright colors mark off a sitting area near a window seat.

To the right of the front door is a dining area, designated by a modern light fixture over an angular table and set of chairs. Beyond that is a living area with a fireplace and a cathedral ceiling. A window seat offers an ideal place to gaze out onto the back lawn of the mansion and look beyond to the ocean.

On the other side of this open area, hardwood floors give way to tile. Here is the kitchen, with its recessed lighting and an abundance of cabinets. On the other side of the countertop is a hot tub — yes, a hot tub — and more tile floor, which extends to the end of the room and one of the two window seats.

At the opposite end of the condo, a pair of French doors opens into the master suite. The ceiling is angled on both sides and has skylights, giving the room a loft feel. At the entrance to the room, there are bathrooms on each side of the door. One has a steam shower and heat lamps and is accessible only from the master bedroom. The second has two doors, one on each side of the French doors, so it can be accessed from the bedroom or from the open living area outside the bedroom. This bathroom also houses the laundry hookups and another shower.

To the left of the condo's front door is a spiral staircase, which leads to the home's additional three bedrooms. At the top of the stairs is another treat: framed photos of the mansion being built are mounted on the wall, and they are included with the condo.

"There's a lot of history in this building," Hopps said.

All the bedrooms on the second floor look down over a partial wall into the living area below. One of the bedrooms has a walk-in closet; another has two closets. There is also a stairway to the roof deck.

Modern on the inside and historic on the outside, the Home of the Week offers the perfect blend of old and new for a person looking to purchase not just a unique, exquisite home, but a lifestyle.
