HIGH POINT -- Furniture showrooms will be in full bloom this spring with the arrival of Lilly Pulitzer Home. The ultimate preppy palette has been applied to a home-furnishings collection by HFI Brands of Irving, Texas. The cheerful brand evolved as an antidote to boredom. As the story goes, Lilly - a young New York socialite who moved to Palm Beach after marrying Peter Pulitzer - was seeing a specialist about her ennui. After several sessions, she reportedly said to her husband: "You own half the orchards in this state, so why don't I sell juice?" It was the early '60s, and Lilly's juice stand on Worth Avenue attracted more attention for what she was wearing than selling. That's how the fashion director for Lilly Pulitzer, Janie Schoenborn, tells the story. The splashing and spilling motivated Pulitzer to come up with a colorful patterned fabric to hide the juice stains. That led to her famous printed shift and, with it, a preponderance of popped collars, lots of pink and green and sockless summers. She earned the title "Preppy Queen." That same well-to-do whimsy permeates the brightly colored prints, patterns and finishes on the furniture collection, introduced at the fall International Home Furnishings Market in High Point. More than 200 pieces were displayed, including four bedroom collections, four dining collections, custom upholstery, ottomans and accent pieces such as nesting tables, chairs and jewelry armoires. The case goods come in crisp, classic white, colorful lacquers or mahogany veneers with polished brass hardware for a more British-plantation look. Naturally, pink is the signature color, with some drawers lined in it. Even the dining-table leaf bags are done in Lilly Pink.
